Un bandolero se habÃa especializado en cruzar el RÃo Grande de vez en cuando y robar bancos en Texas. Finalmente, se ofreció una recompensa por su captura, y un Texas Ranger emprendedor decidió rastrearlo atravesando incluso la frontera. Después de una búsqueda larga, encontró al bandolero en una cantina. Se paró silenciosamente detrás del bandolero, le apuntó su revolver a la cabeza, y en un parsimonioso y cantado inglés dijo:
—You're under arrest. Tell me where you hid the loot or I'll blow your brains out. Cursed felon. (Usted está bajo arresto. DÃgame donde escondió el botÃn o le vuelo la tapa de los sesos).
Pero el bandolero no hablaba inglés y giró y desesperado le trató de explicar que no entendÃa lo que le pedÃa. El Texas Ranger tampoco hablaba castellano y se estaba poniendo nervioso de las caras que ponÃa el delincuente por su miedo.
Afortunadamente, un abogado bilingüe estaba en la taberna y tradujo el mensaje del Ranger.
El aterrado bandolero le contestó que el botÃn estaba enterrado bajo el árbol de roble detrás de la cantina.
—Say what? (¿qué dijo?), —le preguntó el Ranger.
El abogado contestó:
—Go to hell, Gringo. You're not that man to shoot me.
(Vete al infierno, Gringo. No eres lo suficiente hombre para dispararme)
